Blackwood Family Medicine in Virginia Beach is your personal physician and medical practice for treating the most intimate concerns of your health and well-being. We deliver with our additional doctors, and full medical staff including a physician’s assistant, nurse practitioner, several nurses, and medical assistants, having more than 50 total years experience working in the family, emergency, obstetric, pediatric, and women’s health care fields.
We deliver integrated care by coordinating with other providers, hospitals, home care, and specialists.
We deliver quality administrative services from appointment schedulers and care coordinators, to practice managers and billing and insurance specialists.
Our Community Philosophy
Local Physicians Training the Next Generation of Medical Doctors
Dr. Blackwood has the privilege of being on the faculty at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, and has trained medical students for over two decades through this instructor position.
As Associate Clinical Instructors in the Family Medicine program, they are instructing and mentoring medical students as well as providing hands-on training to the next generation of medical doctors. The selected medical students from the EVMS program receive crucial clinical experience that will help them become better diagnosticians while gaining invaluable patient care methods from one of the top family practices in the area.
We believe in doing our part to give back to our community so that it may thrive. Educating future practioners to be the best they can be is our small contribution.

In the Virginia Beach, Hampton Roads, Tidewater areas exists a lively community packed with social events, sports and physical exercise opportunities, and nutritional and culinary resources that all contribute to healthy living.
With so many sources, it can be difficult to track all that our community has to offer.

All of the Hamptom Roads area YMCAs offers individual and family memberships and have activities for everyone. Check your nearest branch for available classes, training, and so much more.
Additional avenues for sports enthusiasts include running, golf, tennis or other clubs, as well as bike, surf, or skate shops that often sponsor local events, and may offer expert advice for beginners or training if you need to develop your skills.

We want you to feel that Blackwood Family Medicine is your medical home base. We deliver multiple services so you will benefit by not being required to seek treatment from higher priced specialists when it is not necessary. We want you to trust us as your main health care provider, earning us your medical care for life.
We never want our patients to feel they are just a number to us.
Blackwood Family Medicine maintains a professional office with a relaxed atmosphere so you and all of our patients feel comfortable while in queue or being assisted. We keep a pleasant environment in our waiting rooms and provide various reading materials or informational pamphlets on many topics.
What to Expect at Your First Appointment
You’ve made your appointment to get established as a new patient. Now what?
Be sure to arrive at your appointment at least 15 minutes ahead of your scheduled time. This allows the office to collect all of your paperwork, create your chart and enter all of your information into our electronic system.
New patients are encouraged to print out and complete the New Patient Registration Packet before arriving for their appointment. This will speed up your check-in process. If you are unable to print out our forms, we ask that you please arrive 30 minutes before your appointment time to fill out your forms in our office.
Other patient information to bring includes:
- Photo ID
- Insurance Card
- List of current medications with dosage and frequency(prescription and over-the-counter as well as supplements)
- Copies of medical records from previous doctors
- History of surgical procedures with dates
- Any current or recent test results or x-rays
If you have medical records that need to be transferred from a previous care provider, please complete our Authorization to Release Medical Records form as well. We will submit that request on your behalf and have your records sent directly to our office.
Common Courtesy is Your Expectation and Our Policy
When you make an appointment, you expect to be seen by your care provider within a reasonable amount of time. If a delay occurs, you appreciate being updated as you wait or given an opportunity to reschedule if necessary. These are just a few common courtesies we provide our patients.

When you are called, you will be accompanied into our patient care area. An assistant or nurse will review your paperwork and chart with you for accuracy. Initial vital signs will be checked and the reason for your visit will be discussed. The assistant will exit the room and speak with the doctor. You will then be seen as quickly as possible by your new medical provider.
Our goal is to make this the beginning of a long and healthy venture.

Procedures Performed in Our Office
Your local family doctors are experienced and equipped to perform the following procedures in our office:
- Pap smears (see Women’s Health Care page)
- Skin lesions
- Joint injections
- I&D (incision and drainage)
- Burn treatments
- Toenail removal
- Suturing (stitches)
- Treatment for infections i.e., conjunctivitis, urinary tract infections, etc.
Electronic Medical Records
Blackwood Family Medicine uses a sophisticated and private medical records software that allows our general practitioners and staff to have quick access to your personal and medical information.
When you come in to your appointment, your electronic chart is reviewed with you and changes are revised instantly. No more flipping through pages and pages of notes and reports that may fade over time or trying to interpret a doctor’s handwriting.
Protecting your sensitive information is imperative. Our electronic medical records are highly encrypted to guard your data against hacking and identify theft.
Please note we will also never share your information with parties outside of our office without your expressed approval.
In-House Lab Work and Blood Draws
Conveniently located in our office, we have the capability to administer certain lab work (urine tests, throat cultures) and draw blood for a wide variety of tests. Results are usually returned to our office in 24 to 48 hours depending on the test. We will contact you with the report.
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, also referred to as HIPAA, was inacted to establish standard protocols for the protection of individuals medical records and/or other personal health information.
Every patient at Blackwood Family Medicine receives a copy of our Patient Privacy Policies at their first visit. At any time, you may ask for a copy. We are happy to provide you with additional information or answer any question you may have about this policy. From time to time or as laws are amended, we may request you provide us with updated information.
