We Are Your Medical Home Base – Beneficial and Practical
A family doctor or general physician is a highly educated first line of defense in healthcare today. They screen and treat the latest “bugs” and conditions and are key contributors to the success of the modern healthcare system.
Family Doctors at Your Family Medical Center
Your family doctor has a responsibility to understand you in the context of your family and community and to emphasize health promotion alongside disease prevention.
A family doctor clinic or practice means you can establish a healthcare home base that advocates for the well-being of you and your family.
There are numerous benefits to having a family practitioner overseeing your medical care, history and records.
Primary Family Care Physicians
Our doctors treat the whole person by taking a principle role in guiding a patients’ healthcare decisions. This creates an opportunity for keeping your health on track while improving your chances of longevity. It is a preventive approach to healthcare.
By establishing and building a relationship with one family practice, you have the advantage of creating a more complete documentation of your overall health as years go by. Physical exam records, labwork and test results, medications, allergies, chronic conditions, immunization records, all in one location. This repository of personal information allows your family doctor to become a specialist in you and your health.
In the event you require specialized attention, your family medical clinic will coordinate with other physician specialists or hospitals to get you the best treatment possible. Our coordinated care will ensure you get the right specialist and we get your specialists records.
Your Family Doctor Nearby
Studies have shown that having a family doctor nearby can save money over the years. Avoiding using an ER or specialist for treatment of non-emergency or general ailments is much more cost effective.
If you have a medical home base, you will experience a more satisfying relationship with your family medical doctor and their staff. The rapport that develops through years of one-on-one interaction means you can feel confident you are getting the care that is best for you.

Urgent care and family practice at one location.
We are a complete family medical center with urgent care and family practice at one location. Our patients benefit from our same day appointments when an illness or injury needs fast attention.
Always call 9-1-1 or go directly to a hospital emergency room if you are unstable or have a serious injury or illness. An urgent care clinic will not be properly equipped to treat these conditions.
Compassionate Family Practice Physicians
It is important our patients understand that our goal at Blackwood Family Medicine is to provide the best medical care possible to everyone. We never want our patients to feel neglected or rushed when being seen at our office. Our practitioners are excellent diagnosticians and want to give patients a thorough examination.
We know your time is valuable and appreciate your loyalty as a patient. Our primary care family practice is dedicated to providing personalized care.
There are occasions when our family practice doctors must attend to patient emergencies. This may cause a delay in seeing patients with scheduled appointments at our office. We hope you will be as compassionate toward our doctors and their commitment to all patients as you expect them to be with you. Our physicians strive to be your best family doctor.
Scheduling The Time You Need With Your Family Medical Doctor
When calling to make an appointment at Blackwood Family Medicine, please tell the scheduler all of the issues you wish to discuss with your doctor. This allows us to dedicate the appropriate amount of time you may need with your practitioner to address all of your concerns. If you have a number of concerns to address, it may require more than one appointment. We promise to work together to meet your needs.
In the event that your illness or injury requires a more in-depth diagnosis or treatment, Blackwood Family Medicine will coordinate with you and your insurance to get you referred to a specialist and facilitate appointments with other healthcare providers.
Dr. Blackwood has spent more than 20 years in practice developing relationships with specialists in the Hampton Roads area. This means he is connected to an extensive network of trusted physicians and healthcare professionals across all specialties.
You can feel reassured we will only refer you to physicians or groups of physicians that have proven to us their high qualities and standards of care are worthy of Blackwood Family Medicine patients. We will also track along with your specialists care plan and follow up with you regularly.
Prescription Medication and Renewals
Warning: Over the counter and prescription medications can be harmful if misused.
Medication prescribed for treating an acute illness or chronic condition must be monitored at regular intervals by a licensed physician for several major reasons.
First, to determine if you still need the medication therapy; second, to ensure the medication is resulting in the desired effect; third, to check the dosage and frequency are accurate or if your medication therapy requires a change; fourth, to make sure you are not experiencing any complications or dangerous side effects.
For the safety of our patients, it is the established policy of Blackwood Family Medicine that we do not renew prescriptions over the telephone. Any prescription renewals will require an office visit.
Please remember to schedule your appointment well in advance of running out of your medication in case you need lab or blood work prior to your renewal.
We are happy to provide hard copy prescriptions for pharmacy or mail order use as well as call in your medication needs to your local pharmacy. We will authorize the appropriate amount of refills to see you through to your next check up.
